This year saw the birth of the brainchild of Tyler from Flashlight Tag and Eloise from verb/re/verb in the form of their digital release label Absent Fever. I thought that upon their most recent release of Birkwin Jersey’s LP which has become their eighth release that I should both do a bit of writing on it as well as some on some of the other recent releases that may have slipped through the cracks and deserved some time in the spotlight. This pair has managed to collect quite the roster of inventive relevant artists and are pushing the edge of new and interesting songs and albums with each and every release. So with no further ado let’s have a look at some of the releases they have put together.
Their most recent release came out this week in the form of UK artist Graeme Coop’s Time Doesn’t Exist Clocks Do LP under the name of Birkwin Jersey. Throughout the album he showcases a flair for looping beat filled tracks but pays attention to subtle details adding in acoustic guitars and other organic instrumentation to give his percussive jabs a melodic counterpoint setting them apart from similar artists. The full EP is available through the Absent Fever Bandcamp and clocks in at a nice full twelve tracks. You can currently also view a video of him playing a version of Lady from the album live as well as a recently premiered video for the song Sixes & Nines on the Absent Fever Tumblr. Here is a sample of one of my favorites from the album titled Early Morning Bassenthwaite to get you interested.
Another artist that I was immediately turned onto due to a video of one of his live performances was Austin native Galapagos. Like Birkwin Jersey, Jacob McNaughton works in loops though his tend to be more soulful and hip-hop influenced. On his Absent Fever release he works his magic with sample based rockers featuring The Beach Boys, Beyonce, and others to create the five track EP BIG CAT. Even though his work is sample based you only need one listen to hear that he is taking those samples and creating completely new compositions that will have you addicted right away. The pair also had a pow wow with the artist on their third podcast that is well worth a listen here. Go ahead and have a sample of my personal favorite track Foool from the EP then head over to the Bandcamp to check out the album.
It really wouldn’t even be an Absent Fever post without the inclusion of the young and prolific artist known as KYNAN. He accounts for three full length releases on the label and his latest full length LP I Will Count The Stars is another ten songs that ring out well beyond his age. Creative electronic dream pop is his flavor of choice and he is doing it as well as anyone in the business. Each of his releases have thus far all brought new elements to the table and you never get tired of hearing more as you can never be sure what you will get. This release has droning intros that lead into almost drum n bass territory, slow sung straight forward dream pop epics, and various electronic experiments in sound all wrapped up in one very complete package. The album is also available through the Absent Fever Bandcamp and here is a sample of Rewind to give you a taste of what he is bringing to the label and the table.
